On Tuesday you will be voting on an ordinance that would create a permanent home for Uber in our community. I know what a huge impact Uber plays in my life and wanted to take this time to let you know why your vote should be to welcome them and the value they bring to residents of the Palm Beaches.
We enjoy going out and living life. We go out to local restaurants. We eat. We drink. We love live music and we love margaritas. We are responsible and know that the budgets of local police departments continue to increase. There is more police activity and anyone mixing driving and drinking should expect to end up in jail. Even more important is the fact a drinking driver is a dangerous driver. You should know this.
You should also know that in many areas there was no reliable means of transportation prior to Uber. I live in Tequesta and I dare you to find a cab. Go ahead and try. Even where there is cab service the difference in quality and value makes Uber a no-brainer. Last summer, we were in Miami and cabs were lined up at the hotel so for that reason we grabbed one for our trip to dinner. The vehicle was filthy, the driver was barely able to communicate and the trip cost me $14 without a tip. On the return trip to the hotel we called Uber. same route, similar traffic, clean late model vehicle and a wonderful driver who was courteous and a joy to spend a few minutes of our evening with. Our bill $4.72. Guess what? Uber is a better mouse trap and should be embraced.
How about my 82 year old mother who lives here in assisted living. Those who are at stages in their life where driving is not practical, or possible or just plain dangerous can have a whole new world open to them with Uber. How about the Honda Classic we attended last month? We arrived and left in Uber. We were dropped off at the front door of PGA National and avoided the traffic and hassles of remote parking lots and bus rides to the venue. The list goes on and on.
The reality is now that we have tasted Uber for me there is no going back. Without Uber I do not go out. The restaurants and bars we keep in business will lose ours. An anti-Uber vote makes absolutely no sense. None. Thank you for considering these real life factors and I hope for the right votes to be cast next week. Better mousetraps. We need more of them......
